SJ's Guide to Model Horse Shows

Model horse showing is one of the most fun experiences, but getting started can be really overwhelming. I've been showing for about five years, and I've made my share of mistakes. Over those five years, I found a variety of resources and techniques to make the whole process go as smoothly as possible (although its still not a perfect system).

Web Resources:

  • RegionX - https://regionxnation.com/
  • NAMHSA - https://namhsa.org/
  • MH$P - https://modelhorsesalespages.com/

Things to Have (Not Required, just Recommended):

  • Access to Printer
  • String Tags
  • Google Drive Account
  • Large Binder
  • Clear Sleeve Protectors

Things I Keep in my Show Kit:

  • New Fluffy Makeup Brush (for Dusting)
  • Tacky Wax
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Extra String Tags
  • Extra Index Cards
  • Sharpie Marker (Black)
  • Pens
  • Phone Charger
  • Camera Batteries
  • Large Ziploc Bags (for Ribbons and NAN Cards)
  • $20 Cash (for Lunch, Raffles, or Jackpot Classes)

Below, I've listed some quick tips and tricks to help the aspiring shower.

Quick tips + Tricks

RegionXNation

NAN Cross Reference List

Sleeve Protectors

RegionXNation allows you to enter your model's information and the site generates printable tags for your horses. This is a quick way to make leg tags, and can be more readable for judges rather than handwritten tags. Check with each show prior to using printed tags though, as some require handwritten tags or no tags at all.

Sleeve Protectors

Paper documentation for models is expensive to re-print constantly. Place documents (COAs, Breed/Perf. Documentation, NAN Cards, Ribbons, etc.) in plastic sleeves in a binder to protect them from damage.

NAN Cross Reference List

This is a pdf document available from NAMHSA. This document lists breeds and their classifications, such as horse breeds that should show under the European Draft division vs. horse breeds that should show under the American Draft division. This is also a great list of horse breeds for general reference as well.

NAN Cards

Ask Questions

NAN Cross Reference List

Fill out your NAN cards ASAP! I fill my cards out the second I pull my model from the ring. This will save so many headaches when you get home and have a stack of NAN cards with no names on them, and you are left to work backwards to fill them out.

Keep a binder with each model's information and documents. This is so helpful when you start showing frequently.

Ask Questions

Show hosts are often very easy to find and happy to help answer questions that may arise on the day of the show. Always check your show packet if possible, but a show host (or even a judge if they are not busy) might be able to answer any questions.
